Managing the First Six Months

Now that you have the until-you-are-ready-to-jump-to-a new-curve plan in place, it’s time to focus on the first six months of this role and to provide metrics of success. Because the math at the low end of the S curve will have them working hard with seemingly little result, you want to focus on measuring effort and momentum, not just accomplishment.

The New Hire: The First Week

The first week on the job can be daunting for both of you. Joint planning and good communication in the earliest days of their tenure will often determine whether it’s possible to build a bridge successfully to your objectives or if you’ll burn the resources from which the bridge should be built without ever putting a first beam in place. Here’s what I recommend.

1.Explain your vision, or why, for the organization and your team.

2.Ask, What are you trying to accomplish personally in this role? What do you need from me to be successful?

3.Lay out your expectations, rules, and hopes for their contribution.
